Headlines -                                                                           May 11, 2012

There is so much I could write about this week. I could write about the fifth grade field trip to Fort Roberdeau and watching Caitlin and Celeste faces as they tried on period clothing. Or I could write about Mary’s email message titled: “Everything is OK” where she informs me about the small fire in the hotel (not our fault) that happened during the middle school’s field trip to Cape May. Or I could write about the wonderful play that Teacher Sunna’s class put on this week. I could also choose to write about the effort and joy our sixth graders displayed today helping to organize the upcoming Trash to Treasure Sale. This week, however, I am led to talk about last Saturday’s Fun Fair. This year’s Fun Fair was not much different from many other years. Through the work of Diane and Pam Adams many other planners, the stage was set for a real party. The weather held up and all the volunteers came for their appointed duties. Our students manned the game booths and did a wonderful job representing the school. The Fair itself netted about $6,500.00 for the annual fund and also generated a tremendous amount of goodwill and awareness throughout the local community. It was very nice to see new faces and old come together to make this event a success. I enjoyed my whole day as announcer and helper. I especially enjoyed the end of the day. Every year, I join the clean-up crew. In previous years, break down and clean up could take up to 3 hours. It is usually accomplished by a small, tired crew. This year was different, much different. I was amazed by the number of helping hands we had this year. I had a hard time directing traffic as booths came down quickly and furniture came pouring into the building. Volunteers took on jobs and stuck with them cleaning, collecting trash, moving, and storing. Within an hour and half, (1/2 the usual time) we were done, really done. The sun had come out; a few tired but happy families were still hanging around. Calm seemed to settle over the school and grounds. One would have been hard pressed to imagine that the school was overrun with kids earlier in the day. I found myself being very thankful for all the volunteer help this year. From setup to break down, this year’s edition of the Fun Fair was one of the smoothest ever. Special thanks goes to Pure Cane Sugar, the Peace Choir, the MS Band, Teacher Brittany and OverHead for their musical gifts. Thanks also go to all our families, faculty, students, and friends. The Fair is an outward expression of many of values we hold near and dear at friends, community, good will, generosity and fun and thanks goes to all who helped us pull it off. We could not do it without you.
