Play Season, Fun Fair and Chinese Club

Headlines - April 13, 2012

Monday was Grandparents, Friends, and Family Day at Friends School.

It is always a busy day at school. This year was no different as we welcomed over 85 guests into our classrooms. Despite the large number of visitors, our teachers love the company. Seeing their students lead their guests around can make a teacher’s heart swell with pride.

One of the day’s highlights is always the Peace Choir performance. Earlier this month, I was told that neither our director nor her student teachers were available on this date to lead the Peace Choir. Needless to say, we were disappointed that our guests would not be able to enjoy the choir. However, some of our older students offered a solution. They volunteered to be student choir leaders. Middle school students Martin, Joe, and Lulu took on the task of managing the choir for the performance. They worked with Teacher Christy to determine rehearsal needs, to arrange the songs, rehearse the choir, and arrange the group. When they entered the Community Room to perform, they were mostly cool, calm and collected. They sang “Imagine” by John Lennon and the result was one of their best performances. It was truly uplifting to hear our young voices sing about world peace and brotherhood. While they were singing, I was thinking that this is exactly what we want our students to be -- resourceful, thoughtful and reliable, and also able to make some beautiful music on their own.
